Naish International is extremely excited to announce that surfing and shaping legend Gerry Lopez has joined their design team. The Hawaiian born shaper, now residing in Bend Oregon, will work alongside Robby Naish, Michi Schweiger, Randy Naish, and the rest of the Maui Hawaii based development team in continuing to advance their board designs into the future.
Already an industry leader, Naish is extremely excited about this new partnership. “Gerry is a perfect fit with our brand,” says Naish President Robby Naish. “He has a style both personally and professionally that’s a perfect fit to ours, is very methodical in his approach to board design, and brings with him unquestionable knowledge and know-how. We are very much on the same page in terms of how a board should look, feel, and perform. ”
“It is both a privilege and an honor to have this opportunity to join Robby and the Naish team.” Gerry Lopez adds. “Shaping has always been my foundation and in my mind, is what allowed me to have the success I enjoyed while surfing [the] Pipeline as well as at other places throughout Hawaii and Indonesia. While I’ve had a lot of publicity for the surfing part, my shaping is little known outside of Hawaii. Because we go back a long ways, Robby does know how seriously I take board building and design. We became friends when I was finding new horizons in wavesailing and Robby was skyrocketing to supreme mastery of that exciting sport. We shared the same ground level intro into tow-in surfing and SUP. So it is with tremendous excitement and some small trepidation [knowing the host of talent I will be shaping for] that I find myself added to the mix in this great company and with this fine team. As in all things, I will endeavor to ‘keep paddling.’ “
Gerry will begin the partnership by working closely with multiple SUP wave and racing world champion Kai Lenny this winter, starting with his big wave surfboards. As a Jaws paddle-in regular and an alternate in this year’s Eddie Aikau Invitational at Waimea Bay, Kai is excited to work with Gerry. “I already have the best SUP boards in the world” says Kai, who just signed a new five-year sponsorship agreement with Naish. “And this pretty much guarantees that we will take my boards to the next level!! I couldn’t think of a better fit with the Naish brand. I’m super stoked to be able to be working with Gerry Lopez… he’s an absolute legend!”
With an international team of professional athletes in SUP, kitesurfing, and windsurfing, there is a constant development and testing process at Naish. Gerry will add value to all of these sports, both in the shaping room and on the water… sharing his stoke for boardriding with both Naish’s team riders and customers around the globe.
Naish International, a division of Nalu Kai Inc. designs, manufactures, and distributes industry leading stand-up paddle, kitesurf, and windsurf equipment. With its development team based in Maui, Hawaii, Naish products are sold in over fifty countries around the world.
About Gerry Lopez:
Gerry Lopez (born November 7, 1948) is an American shaper, surfer, journalist, and film actor.
Lopez was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, grew up in East Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, and attended Punahou School and became the Hawaii State Surfing Champion at age 14.
He was widely recognized as the best tube rider in the world, and was nicknamed “Mr. Pipeline”. He won the Pipeline Masters competition in 1972 and 1973, which has since been named the Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters.
Lopez played an important role in the industry of commercial surfboard manufacturing. He started the Lightning Bolt Surfboards brand of high performance shortboards. Every surfer in the ’70s wanted one.
Lopez and a few friends are credited with validating Indonesia and nearby areas as a comprehensive surf destination, starting with the long, ultra shallow reef tubes at Uluwatu in Bali as well as G-Land, and he still finds himself being lured back to the same waves some 40 years later. As he is in Hawaii and around the globe, Lopez is revered as a legend in Indonesia where he has mentored many young local surfers.
Gerry, at 65, is fitter than most men half his age. He practices yoga daily, is an excellent snowboarder, surfs, and is passionate about SUP both in flat water and in the waves. He has been shaping surfboards for most of his life and still finds more joy in the art of designing boards than in just about anything else.
Lopez has also worked as an actor. In 1982, he co-starred in the film Conan the Barbarian with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Other film appearances include Big Wednesday (1978), North Shore (1987), and Farewell to the King (1989). He has also appeared in numerous surfing documentaries, including Five Summer Stories (1973), Tales From The Tube, Step Into Liquid (2003), and Riding Giants (2004). He is an ambassador for Patagonia clothing company, Maui Jim and Rainbow Sandals and authored a book called Surf Is Where You Find It.
Lopez now lives in Bend, Oregon with his wife Toni and their son, Alex.

When most people think of Las Vegas, thoughts of slot machines, black jack and the roll of the dice usually run through their minds.
Yet the city of “sins and lost wages” has another side, 20 miles on the outskirts is an oasis in the desert in a town called Henderson.
Here paddlers have a man-made waterway to themselves and this weekend’s fall season 72-75 degree air temp was combined with
mild humidity. Glassy calm waters, became home to paddlers from South Africa, Canada, Slovenia, Bahamas, France, Australia,
Switzerland, Japan and the United States including a local contingent of Vegas paddlers.
Welcome to Lake Las Vegas
Aloha and welcome to the N1SCO Sprint World Championships. The venue, a resort on a man made lake located on the beautiful
grounds of the Hilton Resort includes a launch dock, spectator viewing area, competitor area complete with several restaurants,
coffee bar and of course, Lake Las Vegas, a reservoir in the resort community and an ideal place to flat-water paddle that stretches
for 5 miles to the north making for a great SUP inland training ground.
Naish Race Director Chuck Patterson giving instructions
With the Saturday international field of competitors, the mood was relaxed and mellow and as Naish race director
(former world champion) Chuck Patterson gathered the sprint racers for pre-race briefing to mesh the language
barrier from the nine representing countries, while Sabine Schindlbauer scurried behind the scenes getting heats rolling
throughout the entire day.
600 meter open
Said Naish marketing manager Michi Schweiger about the inaugural event, “The N1SCO Championship is
not about bringing down your fastest board and comparing equipment, it’s about everyone having a good
time on the water while riding the same Naish inflatable 12’6”.”
Ethan Koopmans from South Africa had a great weekend.
“Connecting the cultures by water and just going out there with no pressure to race on
the best board”, he continued, “Racers came over from different countries by winning qualifiers and
airfares from their respective countries for the opportunity to be in Las Vegas.”
South African Ethan Koopmans, winner of the morning 600m race and the short sprint
Such was the case for young Ethan Koopmans from Western Province, South Africa. Koopmans
first had to qualify by winning races in Cape Town then headed to the European Championships in St. Moritz in
Switzerland earlier this year. Saturday he dominated both the 200 and 600-meter sprints followed by Switzerland’s Dani Reinhart.
Womens Double Sprint race winner Manca Notar from Slovenia
For European champion Manca Notar, from Slovenia, a double win was just a follow
up to her European Championship domination as she stayed far ahead of the women’s field with Japanese
champion Yoshimi Yatani runner-up respectively in both divisions.
Sprint leading the pack from South africa Ethan Kopmans with Denmarks - in second
Not only were the international paddlers stoked and happy to be here, so was the SUP community here at the Lake.
Kathy Holesapple, who moved to Lake Las Vegas 3 years ago, and also runs her Paddle To The Core
retail store and rental, fitness business represented the local of competitors while making the top ten in the women’s
200 meter sprints while placing it to seventh in the 600 meter.
Dani Reinhart from Switzerland runner-up
As Naish team rider Jerry Bess, who flew over from Hawaii and had to manually hand pump
as many as 15 boards on Friday afternoon said, “The concept of a 1 board format gave
everyone the same opportunity to compete and win. I’m having fun here even though my thing is not sprints,
and this flat water course is perfect for the format.”
Desert Paddle Mirage
Look for this format to grow throughout the world of the Naish N1SCO.

The 2013 N1SCO SUP European Championships were a massive success this past weekend at beautiful St. Moritz Lake in Switzerland. Participants from all over the world lined up to join in on the plethora of sprint, distance and team relay races using the Naish One Inflatable SUP boards, all in hopes of winning a trip to the upcoming N1SCO World Championship event at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada.
Robby Naish officially kicked off the event and even joined in on the festivities in the Team Sprint races while Brian “de action man” Talma brought his warm beach culture all the way from Barbados to chilly Switzerland.
Congratulations to Ethan Koopmans who flew all the way from South Africa to win the sprint, intermediate and long distance races, crowning him the overall champion & lucky winner of the trip to the World Championships in Nevada! Rounding out the podium next to Ethan was Switzerland’s Dani Reinhartin in 2nd (also crowned the N1SCO SUP European Champion) and Germany’s Arnd Duenzinger in 3rd.
Birthday girl, Manca Notar (Slovenia), also reigned supreme by being the fastest woman on the water in all disciplines, taking 1st overall in the Women’s division and 4th overall in the Men’s division. Closing out 2nd place was Petra Offermanns (Germany) and in 3rd place, Sigrid Baumgartner (Austria). Way to represent ladies!
In the Team Sprint race, 10 teams of 4 paddlers each fought hard for the victory – in the end, it was Naish Switzerland who ousted the competition, leaving 2nd place to No Coast Paddlers and 3rd to team Nayana. Amazing job to all participants who ventured out to St. Moritz Lake this weekend! The event was incredibly fun & full of endless laughs, smiles and great sportsmanship.

The SUP 11-City Tour 2013, our 5th edition, finished 3 weeks ago. Participants from around to world
came to Friesland, Holland, facing the ‘ultimate challenge’ paddling 220 kilometers in 5 days.
The routing goes along the famous 11 cities in Friesland and original waterways where ice skaters
started this ‘barren’ tradition on frozen waters in 1909.The event this year took part from 4 to 8 September.
Like previous years the categories were: solo competition, solo tour (amateur),
team competition, team tour (amateur), weekend stage and day stage. The solo
competition was incredibly fierce this year. We would like to share the final results
with you and give a preview for next year.
For the men Peter Bartl of Austria became our new champion. He paddled the
race in 21 hours, 57 minutes and 43 seconds. Closely followed by the Dutch Hawaiian
and 3 year titleholder Bart de Zwart (22:00:15) and Cyril Coste (22:01:12) from France.
Marie Buchanan from the UK won the overall “champion 2013” title in the female competition. She completed the historic 11 cities the fastest for the women in 24 hours, 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Melanie Brandstätter from Austria put up a strong fight and ended in second place (24:11:16). Siri Shubert (Germany) paddled a solid race and ended in third place (25:47:53).
Next year we will be back on with the 6th edition from 3 to 7 SUPtember 2014. Starting with the Prologue on 2 September when we will try to improve the record we set this year during the Prologue with 163 paddlers on the canals of Holland.
We would like to thank our sponsors and supporters for making this 5-day event possible. Also a big thank you to everyone involved the organization, participants, volunteers and online followers for making the event it is today.
See you in SUPtember 2014

We’ve been WOOED! By invitation, they asked us to experience WOOED and we accepted. Based in San Francisco, California, WOOED is a company that builds new and innovative “wood” sunglasses and accessories. Grown from the seed that their products are designed by nature and provides people with a unique experience to be re-connected with nature in their daily life. The WOOED team’s love for life, travel, outdoor pursuits and the environment are expressed in these glasses. They are committed to sustainability, excellence and you as a consumer.
We found these sunglasses unique and stylish, handcrafted from sustainably grown bamboo. They have polarized lenses and are 100% UVA/UVB. I personally liked the spring-mounted plunger style hinges that hug your face but not so hard that they give you a headache. When I lean forward they don’t fall instantly off and they are super lightweight on the bridge of your nose. The other and one of the most important features WOOED has is, they float. So if you’re paddling and they fall off you are not going to lose your money at the bottom of the lake, river or ocean. Should give you enough time to reach calmly down and retrieve them. Price Range isn’t bad either- starting at $95. and ranging as high as $195. Plus they have free and fast shipping but don’t take our word for it, follow the link and check it out for yourself.
