VAIL,CO -- The Vail Valley Foundation just announced that Olympian, U.S. Ski Team member and World Cup veteran skier Steven Nyman will compete at the 2010 Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado June 3 - 6. Nyman will be competing in this year's Stand Up Paddling (SUP) competitions, a new edition to the Games this year. Nyman, regarded as one of America's best competitive downhill ski racers, has been SUP riding for five years now. He's competed in flat water races, but his debut at the Teva Mountain Games marks his first river race. According to Nyman, the similarities between ski racing and SUP racing make the Teva Mountain Games an ideal race event for him to get in some off-season practice. "It's really great training for my skiing," says Nyman. "It requires a lot of balance and core strength along with awareness." The Stand Up Paddling competitions this year include the First Ascent SUP Surf Sprint presented by C4 Waterman, which is similar to the classic Down River Sprint with SUPers racing against the clock on a 3-mile stretch of Gore Creek through icy waters and class II - III rapids, and the First Ascent SUP Surf Cross presented by C4 Waterman, which is an every-man-for-himself battle royal on Gore Creek. Think Skier Cross on SUP boards in class II-III waters. Other athletes at the top of their game competing this year include Brad Ludden, founder of First Descents and named in top ten adventure athletes by Outside Magazine; Tao Berman, considered one of the world's top extreme kayakers; Alex Johnson, last year's Bouldering World Cup gold medalist at the Games; Jeff Lenosky, three-time US Mountain Bike Trials champ and two-time Teva Mountain Games champion; Raimana Von Bastolaer, one of Tahiti's most respected big wave surfers; Brian Keaulana and Todd Bradley, C4 Waterman co-founders. The athlete lineup is subject to change. The sport competitions at this year's Teva Mountain Games, the nation's largest outdoor adventure event, include World Cup and amateur climbing, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, road cycling, trail running, a half marathon, fly-fishing and stand up paddling. In addition to competitive adventure sports, the Teva Mountain Games also include a photography competition, interactive exhibition and demo areas, DockDog canine competitions, the Outdoor Adventure Film School, an interactive family area, free concerts and mountain lifestyle parties. SUP newcomers, enthusiasts, and veterans alike came together on Saturday for Coastal Urge's 2nd Annual Intracoastal SUP Cup at Blockade Runner Beach Resort in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Paddlers from across the world brought their standup paddleboards and hit the Intracoastal Waterway paddling feverishly towards the finish line in both 3.5-mile recreational divisions and 7-mile elite divisions. We were thrilled to meet plenty of fresh faces, with paddlers as young as 11 years old paddling alongside SUP veterans competing for over $13,000 in cash and prizes. In addition to the Intracoastal SUP Cup, Coastal Urge also hosted the Waterman's Challenge. The invite-only, 'iron style' challenge featured three disciplines: standup paddleboarding, swimming, and a choice of kiteboarding or windsurfing. Race times from the Intracoastal SUP Cup are posted below.

May 5, 2010, Virginia Beach, Virginia: Coming this July 10, 2010, Stand Up Paddlers from up and down the East Coast are going to gather at 9am for an approximate 11-12 mile paddle around Virginia Beach. The goal of this event is to raise awareness and funds for two incredible charities here in Virginia Beach - Surfers Healing VB and Team Hoyt VB, as well as promote the sport of stand up paddling and SEA- the Surfers Environmental Alliance. This is considered a paddle event - not a race. Kayaks, paddle boards and stand up paddle boards are all permitted and welcome. Participants will start the sea paddle at either the old Duck Inn site on the Chesapeake Bay or at the kayak/canoe access site before Little Island Park and continue to 4th Street along the Virginia Beach oceanfront. The course will run along the coast and stay within the bathing/surfing area close to shore. Course may be subject to slight modifications. A determination will be made 24-48 hours in advance as to whether we will utilize the “A” Route or the “B” Route based on wind, weather and water conditions. Applications may be found at www.SurfersHealingVB.org, by clicking on the “events” tab for a downloadable application. All applications must be received by June 30, 2010 in order to participate. After the paddle all participants will end up at Waterman’s Surfside Grill for some ice cold refreshments, board demos, and more! Surfers Healing is founded in California and utilizes the unique power of the waves to calm children with autism. This day is about getting these children on the boards and giving families dealing with autism a day at the beach where they can come down to the water as a family and just relax and enjoy a ‘typical’ beach day. www.SurfersHealing.org, www.SurfersHealingVB.org. Team Hoyt VB is the Virginia Beach affiliate of Team Hoyt, and runs 5K’s, 8K’s, Marathons and more while pushing children and young adults with disabilities in strollers. No matter what their condition they can feel the wind in their hair and know that they have the ability to do anything! TeamHoyt.com, TeamHoytVB.com |

Morgan Hoesterey and Jenny Kalmbach become the first women to cross the Hawaiian Islands on stand-up paddleboards

KAUAI, HAWAII, May 3, 2010 – On May 1, 2010, Jenny Kalmbach and Morgan Hoesterey completed the Ka'ie'iewaho channel in 16 hours, crossing 72 miles from Oahu to Kauai on stand-up paddleboards. It was the sixth in their seven-channel quest - Destination 3° - to link together the Hawaiian island chain via the legendary open-ocean channels that separate them, and makes them the first women, and two of only five people, known to have crossed on stand-up paddleboards.
After being delayed 12 hours for winds, Hoesterey and Kalmbach launched from Kaena Point on Oahu at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 30. They paddled through the sunset, through the pitch black of the night, arriving at Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai 16 hours and 3 minutes later, just after dawn. Hoesterey and Kalmbach each paddled the entire channel, forgoing any type of relay to arrive together on Kauai as the first two women to complete such a feat on stand-up paddleboards.
Conditions at the start were calm, with virtually no wind or swell, but in the black of night and through to the morning, 15-ft swells rolled through from the east. Clouds obscured the moon, leaving only the lights from their escort boats to guide them. Illuminated only by the colored glow sticks and small strobes on their water-packs, the women paddled through the dark, relying on their other senses to navigate the rough conditions.
Destination 3° is a way to use one of the world’s fastest growing sports – stand-up paddling – to raise awareness of one of the oceans’ most pressing issues: plastics contamination. Hoesterey and Kalmbach are paddling to raise awareness for the Algalita Marine Research foundation and its mission to quantify the issue and the impact of plastics contamination on the marine environment and by extension, the human food chain.
On each island, Hoesterey and Kalmbach have documented the pervasive plastic litter both above and below the waterline. Strong currents carry plastics from around the world to Hawaii’s beaches, and inhabited or not, no beach yet has not been afflicted.
Destination 3° has crossed the six channels so far: the Alenuihaha (40 miles) from Big Island to Maui; the Kealakahiki (4 miles) between Maui and Molokini; 12 miles in the Au’au channel from Maui to Lanai’i; a 15-mile stretch in the Pailolo channel from to Maui to Molokai; 32 miles in the Kaiwi from Molokai to Oahu and the Ka'ie'iewaho. They’ve also paddled along Molokai’s famous 3,000-ft. sea cliffs, the world’s tallest.
Up next is the Kaulakahi channel between Kauai and Niihau and finally a trek along the Na Pali coast of Kauai before returning home.
About Algalita The Algalita Marine Research Foundation is dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its watersheds through research, education, and restoration. Learn more at www.algalita.org
About Destination 3° Destination 3° is Jenny Kalmbach and Morgan Hoesterey’s stand-up paddle adventure across the three degrees of latitude that separate the islands of Hawaii and the nine legendary channels that link them together. underDOG
A better way to float your best friend!
With 90% of the buoyancy in the water under the chest area, the new underDOG life jacket supports the natural swim angle position of a dog. The traditional cape style dog vest rides on top of the back, pulling the hind quarters up in a horizontal position in the water. Because of the way a dog is shaped, this means that the head rides close to the water line. By moving the flotation under the body, buoyancy is shifted to chest, allowing the hind quarters to sink in the water. The dog’s instinctive swim motion is allowed to be more effective. And the neck is released to so that the head can ride higher above the water line in a more relaxed position. Built in the same factory that makes our USCG life jackets for people, the underDOG features a split form body and durable Nylon and Cordura fabric. Generous reflective trim highlights the collar, full side and top of the vest – areas that are exposed in the water, and shows up against car headlights in the parking lot of the take out. The reinforced carry handles will support the full weight of a wet animal. The carry handle in the collar doubles as a leash attachment point. 4 adjustments points, and cool mesh ventilation across the back and adjustable mesh bridge between collar and body. The underDOG is PATENT PENDING.
