VAIL, CO (June 8, 2010) – The 9th annual Teva Mountain Games, the nation’s largest celebration of mountain sports and lifestyle, concluded Sunday in Vail, CO, drawing a record number of over 2,200 registered athletes and massive crowds of spectators from June 3 – 6. Colorado blue skies and warm temperatures also contributed to the Games’ success. Winning athletes walked away with a cash purse of over $100,000 and bragging rights for a year until they have to return to defend their titles at next year’s 10th anniversary Games. “We couldn’t be happier with the turnout this year,” said Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation. “The Games’ continued success can be attributed to so many things, but they would be nowhere without the dedication of the athletes who support the Games by coming out and taking part.” The Games kicked off with the Bud Light Lime Steep Creek Championship presented by Thule on Homestake Creek where New Zealander Sam Sutton found himself atop the men’s leaderboard after two smooth runs. “This Colorado river scares me,” said Sutton after his run. “I’m stoked just to be alive when I get to the bottom of that.” Tanya Faux captured women’s Steep Creek gold with a crisp first round. When asked about her win she said, “I just felt like an Olympic paddler.” The IFSC Bouldering World Cup presented by Pyramide was one of the weekend’s biggest attractions drawing huge, enthusiastic crowds for its men’s and women’s pro finals. Thirsty for victory after a second place finish at last year’s Games, US Climber Daniel Woods secured a well-deserved men’s gold. “It’s an improvement from last year,” said Woods. “Psyched to come out victorious, it felt really good.” Leading the pack on the women’s side was Chloe Graftiaux of Belgium, outdoing Anna Stohr and Juliane Wurm for the gold medal. The upset of the weekend occurred at the debut of the First Ascent SUP Surf Sprint presented by C4 Waterman, where sixteen-year-old Hawaii native Noa Ginella beat seasoned stand up paddlers, including his mentor, teammate and C4 Waterman co-founder Brian Keauluna, Dan Gavere and Charlie MacArthur. Prior to hopping on his board on Gore Creek, Ginella had never paddled in whitewater or ever been to Colorado before arriving for the Games. The Games came to a close on Sunday with the conclusion of the grueling four-pronged, multi-sport Ultimate Mountain Challenge, where Vail locals Josiah Middaugh led the men and Gretchen Reeves the women. Also, twenty-year-old Canadian native Eric Lawrenuk emerged victorious in Slopestyle Bike presented by Native Eyewear after delivering two high-octane runs in the finals, one of which included a front flip on the final kicker. Among the sports featured at the Teva Mountain Games this year – World Cup, amateur and citizen bouldering, stand up paddling, road cycling, kayaking, trail running, mountain biking, fly fishing and DockDogs competitions – the event also brought in a slew of other outdoor activities promoting the active mountain lifestyle. Sunday’s whitewater finals were cancelled due to dangerously high water levels on Vail’s Gore Creek, but spectators still had plenty of action to see. Throughout the weekend photographers snapped shots of athletes as part of the 2010 Mountain Click Photo Comp. Games-goers also enjoyed free films and concerts, which were part of the Bud Light Lime Mountains of Music series, headlined by Julian “JuJu” Marley and Uprising Band. Not to mention the raging Teva Blackout Party, a great way to blow off some steam after an exhausting sport-filled day. Plus, there were many more free vendor-based activities in Gear Town, the Green Light District and Bear Naked Adventure Village. 2010 TEVA MOUNTAIN GAMES RESULTS CLIMBING IFSC BOULDERING WORLD CUP Men 1. VAIL, Colorado—The recent summer-like temperatures in the Vail Valley, have triggered a dramatic increase in the high country snowpack runoff, resulting in dangerously high water levels and flow, along with significant debris in Gore Creek, forcing organizers of the Teva Mountain Games to cancel all of Sunday’s scheduled whitewater competitions. Cancelled competitions include the Bud Light Lime 8 Ball Kayak, presented by Jackson Kayak; the Teva Raft Cross and the new First Ascent SUP Surf Cross, presented by C4 Waterman. “These three events are always incredible to watch and while we regret not being able to let some of the best whitewater athletes in the world test their mettle in these competitions,” explained Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, “we are not willing to put their safety at risk in order to run the event. One thing you quickly learn when you live in the mountains is to have a healthy respect for Mother Nature. This decision was made in conjunction with our whitewater specialists and water safety experts Dan Gavere and Charlie Ebel, who both concur that the conditions are not safe.” Gavere and Ebel agree that they would prefer more predictable and consistent flows to ensure a safe environment for Sunday’s slate of whitewater compeititons. “I know that if I were a competitor that was registered for today’s competitions,” offered Gavere, “I wouldn’t be out there.” Gore Creek measured at a high of 1700 Cubic Feet per second (CFS) in the early morning hours on Saturday and 2700 CFS in the early morning hours on Sunday.”“With Sunday’s weather likely to be very warm once again, we expect similar dramatic drops and increases in levels and flow,” Ebel added. “We are seeing water levels on Gore Creek at a 20 year high."In addition to the high levels and flow, Mother Nature has also unleashed a torrent of debris that is making its way down Gore Creek as well, including logs, large rocks and stumps that further compound the danger to anyone in the water. High Water Cancels Teva Whitewater Competition “Along with canceling the whitewater competitions,” concluded Imhof, “we are in a high water situation and strongly encourage all boaters to use extreme caution and conservative judgement.”The Organizers will refund the entry fees for all athletes who were registered for the 8 Ball Kayak, Raft Cross and SUP Surf Cross competitions.Although the three whitewater competitions are crowd favorites, the final day of the Teva Mountain Games still has much to offer all the guests in town. Sunday will showcase the finals of the Eukanuba Dockdogs competitions, the youth and adult citizens bouldering comps, the Road Bike time trial, the 10K Spring Run Off, the exciting and diverse GearTown, Green Light and Adventure Village exposition venues and the Men's Slopestyle qualifiers and finals. 16-YEAR-OLD SUPer DEFEATS WORLD’S BEST ATHLETES

PLUS, A PREVIEW OF SUNDAY’S EVENTS
VAIL, CO (June 6, 2010) – It was a day of triumphant victories and mountain fun yesterday at the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Co, the nation’s largest celebration of mountain sports and lifestyle. Daniel Woods (USA) and Chloe Graftiaux (BEL) win this year’s IFSC Bouldering World Cup at the Games, the only World Cup Bouldering event on U.S. soil. And, 16-year-old Hawaiian Noa Ginella surprised everyone with his impressive victory in the First Ascent SUP Surf Sprint competition presented by C4 Waterman over some of the world’s best stand up paddlers.
The world’s top outdoor adventure sport athletes impressed the capacity crowds in Vail Village and challenged their own personal bests. Daniel Woods climbed his way up from finishing second in ’09 and fifth in ’08 to claim the top spot in the men’s category this year. Belgium’s Chloe Graftiaux also rose more than a few spots this year, solving problems, finding all the right holds and overtaking the winners from the last two years.
In a stunning Stand Up Paddling victory, up-and-coming teenaged SUP athlete Noa Ginella beat seasoned SUPers, including his mentor, teammate and C4 Waterman co-founder Brian Keauluna, Dan Gavere and Charlie MacArthur. Before hopping on his board on Gore Creek, Ginella had never paddled in whitewater or ever been to Colorado before arriving for the Games.
Emily Jackson of the Jackson Kayak family pulled off an impressive final run to win the women’s Bud Light Lime Kayak Freestyle competition presented by First Ascent, beating Tanya Faux, who appeared to be on her way to sweeping the women’s kayaking comps with victories in this year’s Steep Creek Championship and Down River Sprint. Dustin Urban, a paddler who’s no stranger to the winner’s circle in this event at the Games, took captured the men’s division with a dazzling run.
Winners have also been announced in the Bud Light Lime Down River Sprint presented by Jackson Kayak, the Xing Tea Freeride Dual presented by Native Eyewear, X-Country Mountain Bike presented by Fetzer Vineyards and Vail Pass Half Marathon.

Saturday night also brought a free performance from Julian “JuJu” Marley, son of Reggae legend Bob Marley and the Teva Blackout Party, a great way to relax tensed muscles. Also, throughout the weekend photographers have been testing their mettle competing in the 2010 Mountain Click Photography Comp. VAIL,CO -- The Vail Valley Foundation just announced that Olympian, U.S. Ski Team member and World Cup veteran skier Steven Nyman will compete at the 2010 Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado June 3 - 6. Nyman will be competing in this year's Stand Up Paddling (SUP) competitions, a new edition to the Games this year. Nyman, regarded as one of America's best competitive downhill ski racers, has been SUP riding for five years now. He's competed in flat water races, but his debut at the Teva Mountain Games marks his first river race. According to Nyman, the similarities between ski racing and SUP racing make the Teva Mountain Games an ideal race event for him to get in some off-season practice. "It's really great training for my skiing," says Nyman. "It requires a lot of balance and core strength along with awareness." The Stand Up Paddling competitions this year include the First Ascent SUP Surf Sprint presented by C4 Waterman, which is similar to the classic Down River Sprint with SUPers racing against the clock on a 3-mile stretch of Gore Creek through icy waters and class II - III rapids, and the First Ascent SUP Surf Cross presented by C4 Waterman, which is an every-man-for-himself battle royal on Gore Creek. Think Skier Cross on SUP boards in class II-III waters. Other athletes at the top of their game competing this year include Brad Ludden, founder of First Descents and named in top ten adventure athletes by Outside Magazine; Tao Berman, considered one of the world's top extreme kayakers; Alex Johnson, last year's Bouldering World Cup gold medalist at the Games; Jeff Lenosky, three-time US Mountain Bike Trials champ and two-time Teva Mountain Games champion; Raimana Von Bastolaer, one of Tahiti's most respected big wave surfers; Brian Keaulana and Todd Bradley, C4 Waterman co-founders. The athlete lineup is subject to change. The sport competitions at this year's Teva Mountain Games, the nation's largest outdoor adventure event, include World Cup and amateur climbing, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, road cycling, trail running, a half marathon, fly-fishing and stand up paddling. In addition to competitive adventure sports, the Teva Mountain Games also include a photography competition, interactive exhibition and demo areas, DockDog canine competitions, the Outdoor Adventure Film School, an interactive family area, free concerts and mountain lifestyle parties.
