The end of the Social Calendar for SUP racing in Hawaii was brought to a conclusion Labor Day Weekend, August 30th. Driving into Haleiwa the ocean appeared calm and flat, while racers kept their fingers crossed for winds to pick up. Even though the sun was out we had burst of rain in the morning, though no one seemed to be too concerned. Racers were already filling the parking lot at Waimea Bay unloading boards as early as nine o’clock even though the race didn’t start till eleven. Local police did the honors of ticketing the unfortunate few who didn’t have proper parking. Anticipation threaded the air as competitors and viewers mulled through the sea of SUP’s littering the grounds and the beach, others occupied themselves with registration.

(Competitors and boards strewn on the beach while sun and rain battle out who will rule the day!)

(Parking at Waimea, Bark worse than it's bite?, Marked and ready to go)
Mike Takahashi, Race Director opened at 10:45, gathering everyone for last minute details and instructions on the race course. It was followed by the opening prayer. Paddlers hit the water promptly at 11:00. When the official hand was dropped for the race to begin there seemed to be some confusion at the start, regardless competitors started to spread out like a wave. As paddlers rounded the point out of Waimea Bay, remains of people on the beach were progressing their way to Haleiwa. Traffic was slow but not uncharacteristic of the North Shore. One could follow the progression of paddlers on the drive to Haleiwa and they were moving with surprising speed inspite of windless conditions in the beginning.

With the finish destination as Haleiwa Alii Park, parking conditions were four times as packed as Waimea. Supporters had already lining the beach in expectancy. The first competitor, Aaron Napoleon, crossed the finish line at 43.09, Robert Stehlik following closely in second place at 44:19 and coming in third Jason Ignacio in 46:20.

In the Women’s Division the first to cross the finish line was Monique Mironesco in 55:27, second, Morgan Hoesterey 56:09, and placing third, Visha Bunge finishing with a time of 1:00:16. It was a good race, and fun was had by all. Joe Lazar owner of Haleiwa Joe’s Grill provided a mouthwatering plate lunch. A big mahalos to all involved! Keep the paddle “mana” and aloha!
